Commemorative Crossing of the Catawba at Greenlee Ford*
Greenlee Ford Access at the Greenway, Morganton, NC
(behind Judge’s Riverside BBQ at 128 Greenlee Ford Road)
Gather on the banks of the Catawba River at Greenlee Ford (behind Judge’s Riverside BBQ, 128 Greenlee Ford Road), for the fifth commemorative crossing of the river. This marks the 239th anniversary of the 1780 crossing by the Overmountain Men on the way to the Battle at Kings Mountain.
This annual event honors the memory of some 1,500 Patriots who crossed Greenlee Ford on October 1, 1780, by foot & on horseback to defeat British Major Patrick Ferguson and his Tory troops at the Battle of Kings Mountain. That battle was a turning point in the American Revolution and helped lead to the British surrender at Yorktown on October 19, 1781, ending the War for Independence.
Bring blankets, sit on the grass, your folding chairs, or just use the chairs and picnic areas along the river’s edge. Immediately following the crossing, look to the outdoor stage! Ed Phillips, Executive Director of the Discover Burke County will emcee, with Sally Sandy, Morganton City Manager as our guest speaker!
You are invited to purchase lunch in the dining room with the stone fireplace. After meals are ordered and delivered, Overmountain Victory Trail Association annual marchers enroute from Abingdon, VA to Kings Mountain, SC will tell the story of the Overmountain Men and the importance of their victory at Kings Mountain.
