Must-See In Mocksville

Local artists are putting Mocksville on the map one paint stroke at a time! Mocksville is just west of the Yadkin River, a day trip to see the massive “Running of the Horses” Mural.

While the horses running reflects the past, the Day and Night themes are reflected with the Sun-facing the East side of Depot St. and with the Moon facing the West.

Artist Cheryl Ann Lipstreu shares, “The mural has been an incredible opportunity to build a bridge of connection of the history of downtown Mocksville Depot Street to the modern, thriving community that it is today. The oak tree is the centerpiece of the design, with the strength of its roots supporting the beauty of the energy around it, representing the unity and diversity of all the people that call Mocksville home”.

During WWII, horses were used on the farms when gasoline became unavailable. They would unload the horses off the train at the depot and run them up Depot Street, across Main Street on the square, and down to where Junker’s Mill is today, now an outdoor theater and farmers market. The large oak tree in the center honors the four oak trees that anchored the town for more than 90 years. The “Running of the Horses” depicts aspects of Mocksville’s history with an artistic flair. Assisting artist Madelyn Greco commented, “This colorful reimagining of a page out of Mocksville’s town history is calculated to captivate viewers of all ages. It’s brilliant colors imbue the mural with the magical possibility that Mocksville is a place where anything can happen!”

Downtown Mocksville is a vibrant and growing community with restaurants, a coffee shop, clothing, and antique boutiques. A modern-day general store and taproom, a place to enjoy a drink or pick up a bag of old-fashioned candy in an old converted 1920’s gas station.

People often enjoy sitting outside at Restaurant 101 or next door at O’Callahan’s and see the vibrant colors that exude from the breathtaking mural a must-see!
