Yadkin Valley Wineries Offer Something For Every Wine Enthusiast

Surry County, North Carolina

Surry County is nestled in the heart of North Carolina’s Yadkin Valley wine region, home to some of the most famous wineries in the state. You’ll get a real “wine country experience” here, with a bunch of picturesque vineyards tucked away in the rolling countryside of the Blue Ridge foothills. There are options for all tastes, from small, cozy wineries to North Carolina’s biggest family-owned estate winery.

It was here in Surry County that North Carolina’s first federally-designated American Viticultural Area – the Yadkin Valley AVA – was born in 2003. Led by Charlie and Ed Shelton of Shelton Vineyards, that designation made the Yadkin Valley a real wine region and helped wineries grow in the valley.

Each of Surry’s wineries has a cool story to tell, from the state’s first certified organic winery at Carolina Heritage Vineyards to the officially-designated North Carolina Century Farm at Stony Knoll Vineyards, which has been in the same family since 1896.

Shelton Vineyards is the state’s biggest family-owned estate winery. Three wineries – Carolina Heritage, Golden Road and Haze Gray – are official Homegrown by Heroes farms, honoring agricultural businesses owned and operated by military veterans.

Yadkin wines come in all sorts of classic varieties, like Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Grigio, Viognier and Riesling. Malbec and Tannat also play a big role in the valley, along with some hybrid grapes, like Cynthiana, Traminette and Chambourcin.

Discover the heart of North Carolina’s wine country in Surry County! Immerse yourself in a true wine country experience with picturesque vineyards nestled in the rolling Blue Ridge foothills. Whether you’re drawn to cozy boutique wineries or want to explore North Carolina’s largest family-owned estate winery, Surry County offers something for every wine enthusiast.
