Breathtaking views along scenic vistas at 2,579 feet in elevation can be found in the Piedmont of North Carolina along the Sauratown Mountain Range in Stokes County. Outdoor enthusiasts, in for a challenge, can achieve this elevation as they summit Moore’s Knob in Hanging Rock State Park. Hike the 4.3 mile loop trail utilizing a section of the Mountains To Sea trail system or enter from the park campground, here you will climb exactly 684 rock step formations to ultimately reach the outlook tower. Take in the breeze, enjoy a snack, and bask in the beauty of views that seem endless from what some deem the “Observation Deck of the Piedmont” and “Front Porch to the Blue Ridge”.
Signage along the railing of the tower identify visible points of interest in all directions including Mount Mitchell, Grandfather Mountain, Pilot Mountain, High Point, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte to name a few. Many who plan camping outings on Independence Day hike to Moore’s Knob before dusk to sit atop the tower and enjoy fireworks displays of communities in central North Carolina and southern Virginia. The opportunity to celebrate July 4th with family and friends above altitudes where fireworks launch and fall, is just another bucket list item to place on that ever growing list.
July 4th ushers in the summer grilling season and City of King Parks and Recreation have a special event on the “barbie” for you. Burgerfest will pit the best grillers from the area against each other for the best, seasoned juicy, and thick hamburger recipes in all of Stokes! Participants can register as an individual or a team to create a signature burgers for evaluation by three judges. Held at Central Park, those in attendance will enjoy music, lawn games, vendors, other food options and samples of burgers from competitors.
On July 13th the Danbury General Store will host their second annual “Summer River Bash” on the banks of the Dan River in Danbury! The concert will feature Jukebox Rehab an up and coming Country and fan favorite, quickly rising to stardom. Opening acts for JBR include Andrew Millsaps and “The Terrible Twos” The concert is just $7 per person, attendees will enjoy a full menu of Grill favorites, shaved ice from “River Shiver” and refreshments from the beer tent.
