Humpday Hootenany: Tony Low

25 March 2020

Come on back for another great performer. Tony Low, singer and songwriter will be performing a set of original songs for us. Check him out at Tony Low

So come on out again, grab a jar’o’beer, pick a stool and hang out with us.

One recent review on Tony: “Though New York’s ex-Cheepskates’ bassist Low’s solo albums come from his adopted Greensboro, NC, our fair city is still recalled. To New York catches him in, uh huh, a New York State of mind. Yet the music is lighter this time, using gentle acoustics and calmly picked electrics, while his voice is now sounding like Brian Wilson’s solo LPs. So is some material; if you like “Love and Mercy,” “Falling Pennies” and “Hum of the Neighborhood” will mollify. (However, “This Old World” doesn’t sound like Wilson’s 1970 Beach Boys’ Sunflower gem, “This Whole World.”). It’s not all courteous non-urban sensitivity, though; the sly, more up-tempo “Murder Beach” decries senseless gun slaughters in neighboring Myrtle Beach, SC as a mock tourist ad, and “The Abomination” makes it evident what Low thinks of our political scene (I concur). Good for him, speaking up.”

“Tony Low, a founding member of New York band The Cheepskates, now resides in Greensboro, North Carolina. But as his newest solo album reveals, he’s still got a New York state of mind. However, we start with the jangling gem “Murder Beach,” which is actually about shootings that took place in Myrtle Beach, SC. Ironically even the locals started referring to their hometown by that name. “Hum of the Neighborhood” is a gentle story about living away from home. Another highlight “The Abomination” is a political rant with just a hint of sarcasm and dismay. Soul searching takes place on “The Plan,” as it follows looking for someone and some hope. Musically its got nice string flourishes and a spacey feel. The songs are filled with anxiety but “This Old World” ends on a positive note. A good LP that deserves to be heard.”
