Hickory, NC
Hickory is known for craftsmanship in many forms including furniture, wood working and more but did you know that Hickory is well known for its craft beer and craft cocktail scene. Our booming culinary destinations are pushing boundaries in a fun and artistic way by encouraging local “mixologists” to create truly unique concoctions. It’s often that you find new drink specials named after the very own locals that “inspired” the newest libation.
On your next trip to the area be sure to visit James Vinson at The Charolais Steakhouse, one of the oldest running establishments in the Hickory area. James uses fresh ingredients to create one-of-a-kind beverages, often written down in scribbles on a cocktail napkin or piece of brown paper tucked away in his personal wooden recipe box. James has figured out the art of mixing flavors to truly make you realize what a passion he has for a tasty and refreshing cocktail.
If beer is more your scene, then you’re in luck. Hickory is home to Olde Hickory Brewery, North Carolina’s second oldest brewery. With crowd favorites like the Hefeweizen, the Piedmont Pilsner, Ruby Lager and more everyone finds one, two… heck even three or four that they can sip on for a while. The brewers at OHB are often times found working on new brews, tweaking and recreating old recipes, creating high-gravity favorites and more.
Before you go, in Conover, stop in for a tasting at Seventeen Twelve Spirits (Foothills Distillery) known for North Carolina’s first Bourbon since prohibition. As a small startup from a local guy, this area favorite is now in most North Carolina liquor stores and beyond. Looking for a way to sample this bourbon in a beverage, swing by Standard Oyster Company to try their extensive drink menu. If Bourbon isn’t your thing, try their “Champagne Supernova!” We promise its every bit amazing as it sounds – and yes we start to sing the 90’s hit song in our head too, every time we hear the name.
Lastly, if you’re in the mood for Tex-Mex flare with a mid-century modern atmosphere – check out Mas Amor Cantina and try their house created Cilantro Pineapple Margarita on the rocks. This hidden gem is served with a spicy salt rim and it’s the best of both the sweet and salty worlds. Enjoy!
