In 1689, after enduring years of religious persecution, torture, and exile, 900 Waldensian men bravely fought to reclaim their homeland in the Cottian Alps of Italy. This victorious endeavor is recognized as the “Glorious Return” and remembered in Waldensian communities all over the world, every second weekend of August. Over the decades, Valdese has honored this historical triumph with a weekend-long event known as the Waldensian Festival. Heritage is truly celebrated as charming Main Street Valdese is transformed into a cultural jubilee—live music and dancing in the street, over 160 street vendors, attraction tours, live theatre, bocce, amusement rides, and more! The town of Valdese looks forward to hosting the 51st annual Waldensian Festival and contributing to the archive of cherished community memories.

So, how exactly does a small town honor a grueling 17th-century mountain trek? By throwing the ultimate street party, of course! If those 900 brave ancestors could see us now, they’d probably swap their rugged hiking boots for dancing shoes and grab a front-row seat for the festivities.
