Are you tired of being hot, sticky, and pursued by mosquitos? Up here on Beech Mountain, we’re not hot… and neither is the weather. In addition to cool breezes, low humidity, and a lack of biting bugs, we’ve got a lot more to recommend. A full schedule of fun family-friendly activities, many of them free, await you here in North Carolina’s high country. Just a few hours of driving takes you into North Carolina’s Appalachian Mountain highlands. There are plenty of lodging options on Beech Mountain, from hotels to condominiums and individual houses suitable for families and groups of all sizes.
The Beech Mountain Resort is open Thursday through Sunday for the summer season, making use of the ski slopes for downhill mountain biking. Scenic chair lift rides, weekend yoga classes and a brewery draw lots of visitors. Free live music at the skybar on Saturday afternoons and more music at the base of the slopes Saturday evenings caps a perfect day. The lift ride to the skybar is $15, but the concerts are free. Please note that the lift isn’t suitable for pets, infants, or small children.
The Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria hosts Family Fun Night every Friday through August 19th. These popular outdoor gatherings are free, and include live music, a bounce house for kids, and a family-friendly outdoor movie as soon as it gets dark. There’s some seating, or you can bring your own chairs.
The Beech Alpen Inn continues a long tradition of Summer Sunset Concerts on the Lawn every Sunday night through September 4th. Enjoy this outdoor venue on the lawn next to the Beech Alpen Inn’s restaurant. Music plays from 5:00-8:00 pm. Bring a chair or a blanket. Genres range from blues to jazz to rockabilly, so there’s something for all tastes. These are free concerts, and food is available on the grounds.
All summer long, there are street dances, guided hikes, and other events you won’t want to miss. September starts with the Mile High Kite Festival over the Labor Day weekend, and the following three weekends feature the Autumn at Oz event at the Land of Oz. (Go to www.landofoznc.com for tickets).
