The Vibe
A rowdy family reunion powered by centrifugal force and sheer Scottish willpower.
If you’ve ever looked at a telephone pole and thought, “I bet I could flip that,” then set your GPS for Historic Rural Hill.
Every April, this stretch of North Carolina countryside transforms into a slice of the Scottish Highlands for the Loch Norman Highland Games. The atmosphere is less “stuffy museum” and more “rowdy family reunion,” complete with the scent of woodsmoke and the constant, soul-stirring drone of bagpipes.
Radical Truth
“The goal isn’t distance, but flipping a massive cedar log so it lands in a perfect ’12 o’clock’ position.”
The star of the show is the Heavy Athletics. You haven’t truly lived until you’ve cheered for a burly amateur attempting the Caber Toss. If logs aren’t your thing, there’s always the Sheaf Toss—flinging a burlap bag of hay over a high bar with a pitchfork—or the Hammer Throw, which looks like a masterclass in centrifugal force.
Tactile History & Liquid Gold
For those who prefer their history a bit more refined, make a beeline for the Whiskey Tasting sponsored by McIntosh Law. This seminar is a legendary staple of the games, offering a deep dive into several “drams” of liquid gold. It’s the perfect way to warm your pipes and toast to your newly discovered Scottish roots.
