Highland Games Weekend Features Log Throwing And High Spirits

Grab your kilt for a rowdy Highland reunion! Enjoy heavy athletics, bagpipes, whiskey tastings, and massive logs flipping at Rural Hill.

Huntersville, NC
March, 2026

If you’ve ever looked at a telephone pole and thought, “I bet I could flip that,” or if you simply have an inexplicable urge to eat savory meat out of a pastry shell while surrounded by men in skirts, then set your GPS for Historic Rural Hill. Every April, this 265-acre stretch of rolling North Carolina countryside transforms into a slice of the Scottish Highlands for the Loch Norman Highland Games.

The atmosphere is less “stuffy museum” and more “rowdy family reunion,” complete with the scent of woodsmoke and the constant, soul-stirring drone of bagpipes. The star of the show, of course, is the Heavy Athletics. You haven’t truly lived until you’ve cheered for a burly amateur attempting the Caber Toss where the goal isn’t distance, but flipping a massive cedar log so it lands in a perfect “12 o’clock” position. If
logs aren’t your thing, there’s always the Sheaf Toss (flinging a burlap bag of hay over a high bar with a pitchfork) or the Hammer Throw, which looks like a masterclass in centrifugal force and sheer willpower.

But the games are about more than just moving heavy objects. You’ll find Highland Dancing stages where competitors perform footwork so precise it would make a clockmaker weep, and the Piping and Drumming competitions that provide the weekend’s relentless, rhythmic heartbeat. For those who prefer their history a bit more tactile, the Longbow and Battle Axe range offers a chance to see how the ancients settled their differences before the invention of the “strongly worded email.”

To do it right, you absolutely must commit to the full experience. Camping is the way to go; the campground is a legendary social hub where the party continues long after the sun dips below the Piedmont horizon. And whatever you do, do not miss the Friday Night Dinner. It’s the unofficial kickoff a “must-attend” feast where clans gather, whiskeys are toasted, and the camaraderie is as thick as the gravy on your bangers and mash.

If you prefer your spirits a bit more refined, make a beeline for the Whiskey Tasting sponsored by McIntosh Law. This seminar is a legendary staple of the games, offering a deep dive into several “drams” of liquid gold. It’s the perfect way to warm your pipes and toast to your newly discovered Scottish roots (even if those roots only go back as far as last Tuesday).

Whether you’re there to trace your genealogy at the Clan Tents or just to see if a man in a kilt can actually outrun a Highland cow, Loch Norman is a weekend of grit, glory, and more plaid than you ever thought possible.
