Beech Mountain, NC
A fall getaway to Beech Mountain, eastern America’s highest town, is truly wondrous. September kicks off the magic with the iconic Autumn at Oz Festival (September 6-8th; 13-15th; and 20-22nd in 2024). Fans of the film travel from near and far to enjoy this immersive theatre experience where they can skip down the Yellow Brick Road and meet Dorothy, Munchkins, the Tin Man, the Lion, the Scarecrow, the Witches and, of course, the Great and Powerful Oz. Visit Auntie Em’s farm and hide from the tornado in the basement as the top of Beech magically becomes the fabled Land of Oz.
But that’s just the festival, a full schedule of family-friendly activities awaits visitors to Beech Mountain. At the Emerald Outback, an Oz themed trail park, hikers and bikers can enjoy over 7-miles of connecting paths, some of which lead to awe-inspiring views.
Beech Mountain Resort’s Scenic Chair Lift Rides offers visitors a bird’s-eye view of the fall foliage across four states. At the summit, you can enjoy food and beverages at the very popular 5506’ Skybar.
And speaking of fall foliage, you won’t want to miss the spectacular display of color that Beech has to offer. While the peak is generally during the first two weeks in October, due to changes in elevation, magnificent color can be enjoyed during the entire month.
The Buckeye Lake Recreation Area is another must see. Designated as a hot-spot for birding by the High-Country Audubon Society, this area offers a wide range of outdoor fun such as kayaking, fishing, hiking and The Buckeye Recreation Center.
There are plenty of lodging options on Beech Mountain, from hotels to condos and individual houses suitable for families and groups of all sizes and let’s not forget a wide array of cuisine choices sure to please even the pickiest eaters.
