We kicked off our weekend escape early Saturday morning, and honestly, Albemarle, N.C., stole our hearts and vastly expanded our waistlines. Here is how to do a day trip right.

Our first executive decision of the day was breakfast at Connie’s, and bless whoever is running that kitchen. I went the fresh route with a beautifully vibrant avocado toast alongside a colorful mountain of fruit. My partner, on the other hand, opted for a glorious, unapologetic southern classic of grits, savory sausage, and perfectly cooked eggs. The ambiance was pure morning bliss, and everything tasted like a hug on a plate.

High-Tech Walks & Antique Treasures

Albemarle does this brilliant thing where historic buildings meet modern tech, allowing you to scan QR codes on historical markers to get the deep-dive gossip on the town’s past while you walk off your breakfast. Strolling further into downtown brought us to the Courthouse Plaza, a gorgeous public gathering space that features a stunning mural on the back of Livi Bugs. Naturally, we had to venture inside, and we were met with a total treasure trove of options for gifting, or, let’s be honest, self-gifting.

Our treasure hunt continued at Lulu’s Tea House & Treasures, a delightful booth-style setup bursting with handmade local items and antiques. Right afterward, we made our way over to The Crow’s Foot, where antiques are packed into every single square inch. I found myself caught in a delightful time warp, torn between picking out a vintage book, admiring a glowing set of Uranium Glassware, and contemplating if I could gracefully ride a vintage Superman pogo stick down Main Street.

The irresistible aroma of fresh-baked dough wafted down the street, leading us by our noses straight to the legendary Albemarle Sweet Shop. This family-owned staple is famous for its iconic, colorful clown cookies, but they certainly don’t stop there. It is a scratch-made wonderland of cookies, cakes, and pies. Throw in fresh-baked bread, bagels, and rolls, and resistance was entirely futile.

I practically had to drag my partner away from the bakery display case, but the promise of lunch at the Downtown Cantina was the ultimate bargaining chip. They use incredibly fresh ingredients, and the burritos and bowls are absolutely massive and fiercely delicious. Beyond the food, the building itself is a total showstopper with its gorgeous historical refurbishment. Look up and admire the historic tin ceiling!
